| “ | Well since you asked, I just finished a 36-hour shift and I'm been struggling to stay awake. Frankly, I tried to tell my manager that I can't work like this anymore. | ” |
Arnold is a technician for Fazbear Entertainment and the main protagonist of FNaF: Secret of the Mimic, where he is sent to one of Fazbear Entertainment's former contractors to retrieve their abandoned property.
Appearance[]
Not much of Arnold's appearance is known, as only his arms are modeled. From what can be seen from said arms, Arnold wears a dull green work coat and yellow leather gloves. If his uniform is similar to the dead technicians found throughout the facility, it would mean that Arnold also wears a blue denim jumpsuit and black boots, though it is unclear as to if his uniform would be the exact same as theirs.
Personality[]
Arnold is a very reluctant, tired and overworked individual. Throughout the game Arnold remains mostly silent, likely a result of his intense sleep deprivation, but during the brief moments where he does speak, he is often shown to be very confused, tired or outright terrified. While he's not one to keep from voicing his opinion, especially to Dispatch, he does appear to struggle to stand up for himself, barely pushing back against his job's inhumane treatment of him with the exception of when his life is in immediate danger and after he is unjustly fired in one of the game's endings. Despite all this, Arnold does appear to be a very good and dedicated worker, though it does appear that he feels he has little choice in this.
History[]
Not much is known about Arnold outside of his job as a Fazbear Entertainment technician. At the start of the game, Arnold is driving home when Fazbear Entertainment Dispatch calls his van to give him a special job. Arnold objects, barely being able to stay awake after a 36-hour long shift, and even points out that the only reason he works so hard is due to his superiors threatening to dock his pay and repossess his truck. Completely ignoring Arnold, Dispatch continues to inform him of his task, sending him to Murray's Costume Manor to retrieve the unfinished project that the establishment's owner, Edwin Murray, failed to complete and deliver to Fazbear Entertainment whilst contracting for them. Dispatch then informs Arnold that he's been supplied with a Data Diver, which will act as a master key to everything in the facility.
When arriving, Arnold finds his way inside and into the main security office where Dispatch gives him a full breakdown, explaining to Arnold that the movement they had been detecting in the building was an old machine made by Murray —an old endoskeleton that would adapt to any costume and character who had, for unknown reasons, obtained a glitch that resulted in homicidal tendencies— and that Arnold was here to obtain the schematic for this animatronic. After Arnold reactivates the power to the wing of the facility he's in, he spots a strange mascot suit stalking him, but is cut off when he tries to inform Dispatch about it.
Throughout the remainder of the game, Arnold stays fairly silent as multiple different animatronics attempt to hunt him down and kill him. Around 2am after escaping Big Top, Arnold tries to get Dispatch to send someone to help him, but to no avail. Eventually, just before 4am, Arnold is able to obtain the schematics for the Mimic and make it back to the main office. From here, his story differs.
Bad Ending[]
If the player decides to hand over the Data Diver like Dispatch asks, he will be allowed to go home, with his van mysteriously prepped in the garage. Once Arnold hops inside and begins driving home, Dispatch suddenly contacts him and informs him that they had lost connection and had been trying to get back into contact with Arnold all night. When Arnold confusedly protests that he had been in contact with Dispatch and had handed over the Data Diver as told to, Dispatch then takes this as an admission of guilt and fires Arnold, much to his protest. After Dispatch informs Arnold that Fazbear Entertainment's lawyers would contact him in the near future, he hangs up and Arnold notices something in the back of his car. Suddenly, the Mimic begins to approach Arnold and knocks him out. When Arnold awakes, he is in a mysterious location underneath MCM stuck inside a springlock suit, on-stage with two animatronics, all while the Mimic watches from the darkness.
Normal Ending[]
If the player decides to not hand over the Data Diver, Arnold will activate the Parachute Protocol on the security office computer, opening a secret crawlspace underneath the office couch. As Arnold crawls through these secret tunnels, Dispatch begins to chastise him, mockingly picking out potential suits for the Mimic to stuff Arnold's body in, settling on a dog due to Arnold following all instructions given before biting the hand that fed him. Eventually, Arnold finds an underground prototype of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, with prototype animatronics and all. Dispatch continues to chastise him, and soon, reveals that the Mimic had followed Arnold down there. After using the location's spare Springlock Suits to waste the power, "Dispatch" reveals themself to actually be F10-N4, much to Arnold's bewilderment. F10-N4 tells Arnold to head to the main house and convince Edwin to fix the Mimic so it may stop pursuing him. Arnold heads to the main house, but just as he gets to an office inside it, the Mimic once again begins its attack. Making his way through the crumbling building, Arnold finally escapes MCM and gets in his van, driving away all while multiple Proto Mimics attempt to break into it. But, just as the attacking animatronics appear to be dealt with, the Mimic reveals itself and grabs onto the steering wheel through his front windshield, crashing the van. Arnold awakens, too weak to move, and the Mimic approaches him, only to take the now broken Data Diver from Arnold, and walk away, presumably leaving the technician for dead.
Secret Ending[]
Throughout the secret ending, Arnold goes through the same events as the Normal Ending, but instead of escaping the house and facility, Arnold uses a newly glitched Data Diver to access secret rooms within the house, and eventually, what appears to have once been David Murray's bedroom. Using a storybook and a white tiger plush, Arnold is able to deactivate the Mimic, allowing him to insert the Data Diver into its chest, and remove its violent tendencies seemingly for good. As the Mimic lays in bed to fall asleep, Arnold is left standing, silently watching as F10-N4 and the Mimic say goodnight to each other. Arnold's ultimate fate after this ending is unknown.
Trivia[]
- In a scrapped version of the intro, Arnold reveals to Dispatch facts about his family life, most notably that his parents have passed away, his wife divorced him a year prior, and that he's a now single father, and hasn't seen his child in quite some time.[1]
- Considering this intro was scrapped, all of this information about his character is dubiously canon at best, but more likely uncanon.
- This intro also features a slightly earlier version of Kellen's voice for the character, where he sounded more shrill than he does in the final game.
A comparison between Arnold's model and the dead extraction team members' model.
- Arnold doesn't appear to be well respected by his coworkers, with many of them apparently betting on whether or not he'd survive his visit.
- The exception of this appears to be Dispatch, who seemingly bet in favor of Arnold surviving, though this doesn't stop Dispatch from being disrespectful to the exhausted technician.
- The models for the extraction team corpses found throughout MCM appear to have an extremely similar uniform to Arnold, with the main difference being their gloves and a stripe on their sleeves. While this could imply some of Arnold's physical appearance, the differences between the two models may suggest that his uniform could be more different.
- Arnold shares his name with an endoskeleton from the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, though this is likely a coincidence considering the endoskeleton had other names given to it by the film crew.
