Development[]
Into the Pit was in development for an extremely long time before it would be leaked by Scholastic on January 23. Later, a website with multiple assets and a trailer relating to the game would be discovered by fans.[1] On January 25, Mega Cat Studios and Scott Cawthon would officially announce the game, assuring fans that they didn't need to be "hush hush" about the game.
On February 19, 2024, a thumbnail for Into the Pit was added under the spotlight section of Mega Cat Studios home page.[2]. Later on April 1, Mega Cat made an April Fools video stating they were becoming a pizza business. A in-game picture of Into the Pit briefly flashed on the screen during said video.
On June 5, Mega Cat would announce that Into the Pit would be showcased at the Guerrilla Collective 2024 showcase the following day. During said showcase, the first official Into the Pit trailer was revealed. A Steam page for the game, as well as an official Jeff's Pizza website and the subpage on Mega Cat's website were also unveiled. After being closed for updates, the Jeff's Pizza website was set to open on June 12th. However, the website was overwhelmed with traffic and the release of the website was delayed to an unknown date. As of the game's release, the website is still closed.
Finally, the game was set to release on August 8th 2024 as the official 10th Anniversary title, though due to a mistake, it released early in Japan, leading to a world-wide early release for the game on Steam, with console releases being planned for later that month.
Trivia[]
- In the time leading up to the announcement of Into the Pit's appearance at the Guerrilla Collective 2024, a Mega Cat developer posted a countdown in the form of pizza emojis, starting at 5.
- They wold do something similar on Twitter by releasing screenshots each day counting down to the final trailer on the 7th, a day before the intended release.
- According to Scott Cawthon, the game would've been much shorter when they initially started, but after so much time they decided to expand on it more and more making it a fully fledge title.[3]
- Scott has teased the idea of making more games like Into the Pit, with Fetch being the next story he'd adapt.[4]

And originally, it was just supposed to be a little novelty one-off like, oh yeah here's a little company that makes 16 bit cartridges, [...] It was still just supposed to be a novelty. But as the development went on, everybody was looking at it, thinking, this looks pretty good. This actually looks really good. And so, they just kept on going with it. They could've stopped a lot sooner, and they could've stopped with just a little simple novelty game, but they just kept going, and I kept thinking, yeah, keep going.
