The Protomimics are a large group of miniature animatronics that appear as minor antagonists in FNaF: Secret of the Mimic. As their name suggests, they are prototype models for the Mimic.
Appearance[]
The Protomimics all appear as hodgepodge creations that are barely able to function. There are five primary body types to the Protomimics, with sub-types within them.
Protomimic A is the simplest, and smallest, of the Protomimics, being a small green limb suit-piece with a small metal pole sticking out the top with three glowing eyes on it attached by a green wire. Each of its limbs are completely different types of endoskeleton limbs, with a thin right arm, a left arm made entirely out of ball joints, a right leg that ends in a two-pronged foot, and a right leg with hydraulic pistons and a small brown animal-like foot piece.
Protomimic B is the first Protomimic type to hold variations, holding the most out of any of them with five in total. These Protomimics are made up almost entirely of limbs, with hands and feet sticking out of random spots and, in some cases, acting as their head or an elongated neck. Their limbs vary in color, appearing as either blue, green, orange or brown, and each of them have at least one leg made up of a metallic, non-endoskeleton piece such as a bit of a metal support beam or what appears to be a meat tenderizer. All of them have a large metallic box as their torso, and their eye placement and count varies between their different appearances, with two having three eyes attached to a hand that acts as their "head", and the other three variants having one eye on a suit piece that acts as their elongated neck. Finally, the suits that make up their limbs utilize rubber tubing on their joints.
Protomimic C is another single-variant Protomimic like Protomimic A. It's a smaller model that uses a mending plate bent into a circle as a torso with a prototype version of the Mimic's jaw connecting the circle in its center. Its two legs vary slightly, with the right leg having a blue suit piece on its shin, and the left leg lacking a foot and having a slightly different thigh build. Its left arm is made up of the forearm and hand of a blue animatronic suit, and its right arm is made of two metal poles that have glowing eyes attached to the frontside of the upper arm, and where the hand would be. Finally, it has a paper plate for a face with a crudely drawn smiley face reminiscent of the Paperpals.
Protomimic D is the only Protomimic model to have variations. Both Protomimic Ds are walking yellow and white trash bins with legs and a tongue made up of an arm sticking out of their open lids. The default variant has two glowing eyes attached to the open lid by a yellow and red wire that can be seen running through its bin body. The "tongue" is made up of a brown suit arm that lacks a hand, having two wires sticking out at the wrist area, that connects to the pelvis piece inside. Its right leg is made up of an orange suit arm and hand as the thigh and a blue suit arm and hand as the shin, with the left leg appearing as a normal endoskeleton leg with the previously seen meat-tenderizer-like item as the foot. Protomimic D2 is mostly identical outside of a few minor differences, the most notable of which being the lack of an upper lid. This variant's tongue is a full blue arm and hand, and its legs have swapped places. Finally, due to lacking a lid like its counterpart, it instead holds a single glowing eye draped over the open top, and a paper plate face similar to Protomimic C's, albeit now with a frown instead of a smile.
Protomimic E is the final, and most unique, Protomimic model, with its most obvious and noteworthy feature being its microwave head. Its pelvis is made up of the same metallic box piece that made up Protomimic B's torso, but now with a small speaker on it. It also has an endoskeleton arm extending out of the top to act as a connecting torso between the box and "head", acting as a torso. It has two small arms; the right one with an endoskeleton hand and an eye above its elbow, and the slightly lower-placed left one having a small broken green suit piece with wires sticking out and another eye just above the elbow. Its right leg is that of an endoskeleton leg with a bent metal rod as a foot, and its left leg is a yellow suit piece with a two-pronged foot seen on many other Protomimics.
All Protomimics also have burned variants, with them appearing as non-lethal entities in the burning Retail Showroom just before the ending cutscene.
History[]
Practically nothing is known about the Protomimics aside from that they mainly resided in Edwin Murray's home. This chosen location, as well as their file name revealing them to be "Protomimics" implies that these were potentially Edwin's earliest attempts at making Mimic1. Alternatively, it is speculated that they were instead made by M2 during it's brief period of mimicking Edwin, explaining their unconventional designs, though this is unconfirmed.
After Arnold initiates Cradle.exe, and all of MCM and Edwin's home begin to burn down, the Protomimics begin to flee their places of hiding in the connecting tunnels between the two locations, aiding the Mimic in trying to stop Arnold from escaping. This ultimately leads to many of them being destroyed, buried underneath rubble, or stuck panicking in the burning Retail Showroom. Once Arnold makes it to the parking lot and his van, a swarm of Protomimics attempt to corner him, with some latching onto his van as he drives away. While their attempts to break into the vehicle are ultimately unsuccessful, with them all being knocked off the car, they would end up buying the Mimic enough time to get to Arnold's windshield and crash the van.
Gameplay[]
The Protomimics are extremely minor enemies in the Normal Ending's final chase with the Mimic. They will simply, and slowly, run in the direction of the player, blocking off certain hallways as a way to guide the player in the right direction. They will continue their pursuit for most of the chase before they ultimately cannot keep up with the player once they get into the coaster car that leads back to the Retail Showroom. Once the player exits the building, tons of Protomimics await him and begin running at them from all sides, forcing the player to rush to the van. If the player makes contact with any Protomimic, they will be jumpscared and killed.
Other non-lethal Protomimics can be found in various areas throughout the chase, with some falling down deactivated in front of the player, climbing up the wall to avoid falling into a smelting pool, or simply trying to escape the fire in the Retail Showroom at the entrance.
Unused Content[]
One of the unused Protomimics, specifically B.
The Protomimics all have unused texture files that include new color variations for the different body types. This texture changes their limb colors from Blue, Green, Orange and Brown to Red, a Dull Blue, a Dark Green, and Purple. Protomimic C and D2 in particular also gain different expressions for their paper-plate faces, with C's being a blank, neutral expression with wide eyes and a straight line for a mouth, and D2's being a smiley face with large cheeks and its eyes looking downward.
Strangely, for all Protomimic types except the Protomimic B family & Protomimic C lack normal versions of their unused textures, only having burnt variants. The only Protomimic to have zero unused variants is Protomimic B5. It is unknown why any of these textures went unused.
Interestingly, the burnt unused variants for a select few Protomimics, most notably Protomimic D or D2, can be found in Edwin's hidden workshop in the basement below MCM's Admin Wing, albeit only as singular parts.

Trivia[]
- The Protomimics go completely unexplained in-game, with their first appearance being them running to the elevator the player takes to the tunnels at the start of the Mimic chase.
- When jumpscaring the player, Protomimic B and C will always appear behind the one that caught the player, even if there were no other Protomimics in the area.
- The Protomimics, true to their name, have multiple features that appear as early versions of the Mimic itself, such as some of their limbs using hydraulic pistons and rubber tubing, or the more obvious prototype Mimic jaw in the chest of Protomimic C.
- Protomimic E is the only one to have an endoskeleton hand, as all other Protomimics with hands have suits on them.
- The only Protomimic to have zero unused variants is Protomimic B5.
- Protomimic B and its variations are the only Protomimics to lack a unique jumpscare scream, simply reusing Protomimic A's dedicated scream.
- Additionally, Protomimics D and D2 are the only Protomimics to hold unique screams between variations, likely due to the paper plate face held by Protomimic D2.
