The Star Orphans, often referred to as Starbrights, are a set of small animatronic dolls produced by Murray Co. and are found in select locations in Murray's Costume Manor. While their primary function is that of line of nightlights, their plush forms double as charged devices that power lights in MCM's various basements. They debuted in Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic.

Appearance[]

The Star Orphans appear as star-shaped dolls with hearts on their stomachs and backs, as well as small baby-like faces . The different points on the star appear to act as limbs, with the fifth point acting as a hat, sitting above the face with a small bell on the back. The Star Orphans' faces appear as light-skinned babies with star and diamond-shaped freckles, rosy cheeks, thin eyelashes, and pale blue eyes. The Star Orphans all glow a bright yellow color, giving off a faint yellow-orange light.

The Star Orphans come in four different colors, each having unique attributes to them. The Red Star Orphan has a wide smile and a blue pacifier in its mouth. The Yellow Star Orphan has a cheeky smile with its tongue sticking out, and is missing its right eye, leaving an empty socket with a bit of wire sticking out. The Blue Star Orphan has a sad expression, with a very large frown, and a crack on its heart. Finally, the Green Star Orphan has a more angry expression, with angled eyebrows and a stern frown.

Gameplay[]

The Star Orphans first appear in the basement below MCM's Admin Wing during the boss fight against the White Tiger. Acting as buffers between each area, the player will find the orphan plugged into a pedestal just before a labyrinth of hallways. Using the Star Orphan's light, the player can shield themselves from the White Tiger getting too close, and navigate these mini-labyrinths to make it to the next area, in which the Orphan must be placed onto a second pedestal to activate the lights of this section. The Red, Blue and Green Star Orphans can all be found in this basement, and are used at different portions of the fight.

The Yellow Star Orphan uniquely is found in the basement underneath the Retail Showroom, and is used by the player to navigate the basement and avoid Sleepy Moon. At different points in the basement, the Orphan can be placed into a pedestal to light up a small section of the hallways, allowing the player to locate one of the missing pieces to the Conduit Puzzle. After repairing the puzzle and obtaining the item behind the door powered by it, the player can then use the Star Orphan to open the door to elevator and leave the basement.

Trivia[]

  • The Star Orphans are inconsistently referred to with two titles throughout the game, with their collectable item referring to them as a "Star Orphan", meanwhile Moon.exe and a terminal in the Story Time Showroom references them as "Starbrights."
    • Additionally, their files simply refer to them as "Star" with a letter next to it discerning the specific color.
  • The Star Orphans are clear references to the PlushBabies. This is seen through the Red member being the default one, the Blue Star Orphan having a cracked heart similar to the Blue PlushBaby's stitched scar, and the Yellow Star Orphan lacking its right eye like the Yellow PlushBaby.
    • On top of this, the Green Star Orphan could be an extension on this callback, making reference to the scrapped Green PlushBaby from Help Wanted.
    • Secret of the Mimic was actually the first of Steel Wool's FNaF games to not feature the PlushBabies, making this reference quite ironic.
  • Whilst holding them, the Star Orphans will look directly at the player, which may suggest that they are sentient to some degree.
  • Strangely, when dropping a Star Orphan onto the ground, the plush will act as if its collision is larger than the object itself, and it will rotate and float above the ground.
